Black Girls Code

Accenture Federal Services in partnership with the DC chapter of Black Girls Code hosted an event called Future Tech Boss, aimed to introduce young black girls to different design focused careers in tech.

During the half day event the girls were exposed to various careers in tech. One of my duties that day included hosting a breakout session where I taught UX design principles and the importance of prototyping.  Towards the end of the event I supervised a team of girls as they created and presented a mobile app concept targeted to help kids their age with homework.

"I wanted to make sure that as I grew in my career, I became the role model I always wished I had."

I have always been obsessed with all things tech, starting from when I was a young black girl. Growing up there was a lack of tech role models or programs, so my ideas of what it looked like to work in tech was based off of TV and movies. It always made me feel uneasy because what I saw did not reflect me. It wasn't until at a camp in middle school I was exposed to many black women and girls that looked like me who worked in or were interested in technology. When I graduated with my computer science degree I decided to always volunteer.
